The Most Effective Treatment for Acid Mine Drainage Water

Somerset Environmental Solutions' Maelstrom Oxidizer Treatment Method The patented Maelstrom Oxidizer® uses low-pressure high-volume air to accelerate oxygenation of bad water and precipitation of hazardous metals contained in acid mine drainage. It rapidly degasses dissolved carbon dioxide which causes an instantaneous increase in pH. This increase in pH combined with water in a super oxygen saturated state, increases the coagulation of dissolved iron and other hazardous metals and significantly reduces chemical costs.

The Maelstrom Oxidizer®, made out of HDPE (high-density polyethylene), contains no moving parts other than a blower. Uniquely designed with low operating horsepower, annual electrical operating costs are minimal. Every gallon of raw water is processed as it passes through carefully designed reaction chambers until super-saturation occurs. Anything less than super-saturation could dramatically increase chemical needs.

    Fifteen years running, this system is treating net alkaline water containing 105 milligrams per liter total iron without the addition of any chemicals. Effluent iron is <1 milligrams per liter and is monitored by the PA DEP. Land area is twenty times less than would be required for a passive system.
